Sacred Stillness: What Happens When We Let Spirit Speak First
In today’s fast-paced world, silence can feel like a luxury—something we encounter only by accident, between pings of notifications or during a moment of exhaustion. Yet within that silence lies a powerful presence. Sacred stillness is not merely the absence of noise, but the presence of something deeper: the voice of Spirit.
What happens when we let Spirit speak first? Everything changes. Our decisions become more aligned. Our words carry deeper meaning. Our relationships begin to reflect a more authentic version of ourselves. Letting Spirit speak first is about surrendering the ego, pausing the mental chatter, and allowing divine wisdom to rise from within. It’s not always easy—but it is always transformative.
The Noise That Drowns the Soul
Most of us are accustomed to letting our minds speak first. We wake up thinking about to-do lists, obligations, fears, ambitions, and expectations. Our culture prizes productivity, quick thinking, and constant movement. But beneath all of that mental activity lies a quiet, knowing presence that we often ignore in our rush to be “efficient” or “successful.”
This noise isn’t just external—it’s internal. Our minds are rarely quiet. We fill silence with podcasts, music, social media, and small talk. But when was the last time you sat in true stillness—not to think, not to plan, but simply to be?
In sacred stillness, we create the space for Spirit to speak. This voice is not loud or demanding. It whispers in intuition, nudges in gut feelings, and glows in moments of deep peace. But we must be willing to get quiet enough to hear it.
Letting Spirit Lead: The Shift in Perspective
When we make space for Spirit to speak first, we shift from reaction to response. Instead of responding to life from fear, habit, or ego, we allow divine guidance to lead us. This doesn’t mean we abandon logic or action—it means we align those actions with a higher wisdom.
Letting Spirit lead begins with a choice. A decision to pause before speaking, praying before planning, or listening before responding. These small shifts have profound effects. They open us to compassion instead of judgment, trust instead of control, and clarity instead of confusion.
This shift is especially powerful in moments of stress or uncertainty. Instead of spiraling into fear-based decisions, we can take a breath, enter sacred stillness, and ask, “What does Spirit want to say here?” The answer often comes not as words, but as peace, clarity, or a sense of inner knowing.
Practices That Cultivate Sacred Stillness
Sacred stillness isn’t something you stumble into accidentally; it’s something you cultivate intentionally. Here are some simple practices that can help you invite Spirit to speak first:
1. Daily Meditation or Silence
Start your day with 5-10 minutes of silence. Sit with your eyes closed, breathe deeply, and simply observe. Don’t try to solve anything. Just allow the stillness to unfold.
2. Journaling with Intention
Before journaling, ask a question such as: “What would You have me know today?” or “Spirit, what do You want to say?” Then, write whatever comes to mind without editing. This allows your inner wisdom to come forward.
3. Breath Awareness
The breath is a bridge between body and spirit. When you’re anxious or overwhelmed, pause to take three slow, deep breaths. Ask Spirit to guide your next step.
4. Sacred Listening
Before responding in conversation—especially difficult ones—pause and listen. Not just to the other person, but to your heart. What feels true? What response honors both your truth and theirs?
5. Time in Nature
Nature naturally carries the energy of sacred stillness. Walk without your phone. Listen to the wind, watch the sky, feel the earth beneath your feet. In this quiet communion, Spirit often speaks the loudest.
The Fruits of Sacred Stillness
When we make the radical choice to let Spirit speak first, we begin to see life differently. Things that once felt overwhelming now feel manageable. Conflicts that seemed insurmountable soften. Creative solutions appear where none existed before.
Spirit doesn’t always give us the answer we want—but it always offers the answer we need. Sometimes that answer is a reminder to wait. Sometimes it’s a nudge to act. Other times, it’s a simple assurance that we are not alone.
Over time, sacred stillness becomes more than a practice—it becomes a way of life. We learn to walk slower, listen deeper, and speak with greater intention. We trust that our inner compass, when aligned with Spirit, will guide us more faithfully than any external noise ever could.
Living from the Inside Out
The world teaches us to live from the outside in—to let external events, opinions, and outcomes dictate our inner state. But sacred stillness teaches us to live from the inside out. To root ourselves in divine presence before engaging with the world. To let Spirit speak first—before the news, the email, the task list, or the phone call.
This isn’t about detachment or escape. It’s about connection. Deep, soulful connection with the truth that lies beyond words. And when we are connected to that truth, we become more present, more powerful, and more peaceful.
Sacred stillness is not a luxury—it is a necessity for a grounded, spirit-led life. In the stillness, we find clarity. In the silence, we hear guidance. And when we let Spirit speak first, we begin to live not just from ourselves, but through something far greater.
So today, pause. Take a breath. Let the noise settle. And listen.
Spirit is always speaking.

Lovely reminder and practices.
Years ago I took a workshop with energy worker Rosalin Bruyere. She shared that mindful moment – Qigong, yoga – was a quick way to get into the right brain patterns for mediation, and recommended folks with busy minds try sitting following a mindful movement practice! This was brilliant for me- though now I can ‘slip in’ more easily!

What great tips Brenda and just what I need to read this morning. Breathe, settle and listen.
“Sacred stillness teaches us to live from the inside out. To root ourselves in divine presence before engaging with the world.” – this is exactly the way I start my day, each day. Thanks for sharing those tips. I tried a couple of them tonight but could not get still, so I’m going to try again tomorrow morning.
This is a profoundly grounding and eloquently expressed piece. You’ve captured the essence of sacred stillness with such clarity and grace—showing it not as passive silence, but as an active, transformative encounter with the Divine. The practical guidance you offer makes this spiritual practice feel both accessible and deeply necessary. A truly soul-nourishing read.
Thank you for this! When I sit in stillness I feel more connected with Spirit (God). Walking in the woods is especially peaceful place to do this for me. Once a week, I attend Eucharist Adoration at my church and there I find peace and can listen to what he wants me to do.
