Writing Through the Soul: 7 Tips for Freestyle Poets:

1. Embrace spontaneity: Freestyle poetry is all about breaking away from rigid structures and rules. Allow your thoughts and emotions to flow freely without feeling restricted by traditional poetry formats.  This is easily said, when you have this type of personality to begin with.  I know because that is who I am.  That is why freestyle poetry is my favorite style of poetry.

2. Dive into your emotions: Freestyle poetry is often driven by raw and personal emotions. Tap into your deepest feelings and write from the heart. Don’t hesitate to dig deep and express yourself authentically.  Being an empath helps me with my poetry.  I have always been a very emotional person and freestyle poetry lets me express my feelings in a positive way.

3. Experiment with language: Freestyle poetry gives you the freedom to play with words and language. Don’t be afraid to try out new words, create your own metaphors, and use unconventional phrases. Let your creativity take the lead.

4. Focus on imagery: Visual imagery can make your free style poetry come alive. Use vivid descriptions, sensory language, and metaphors to help your readers see, hear, smell, taste, and feel what you’re expressing in your poem. Actually,  picture the events of the poem in your mind as you are writing it.

5. Break the rules: Freestyle poetry provides the opportunity to push the boundaries of traditional poetic rules. Experiment with unconventional line breaks, unpredictable punctuation, and asymmetrical structures. Allow your poem to take on its own unique form.  Give your poem a life of its own.

6. Find inspiration in your surroundings: Freestyle poets often draw inspiration from their immediate environment. Observe the world around you – nature, people, objects – and let those observations spark your creativity. Let your personal experiences and memories also shape your poetry.  I get a lot of inspiration when I go for a walk in the woods.

I also get inspiration from the people around me and the way they make me feel.  Life events are great inspiration for freestyle poetry.  You can write  about anything,  There are no limits but your imagination.

7. Don’t worry about perfection: Freestyle poetry thrives on imperfections. Don’t over-edit or strive for flawlessness. Embrace the rough edges and let your poem retain its raw and authentic essence. Focus more on the emotional impact rather than perfecting every line or word.  Sometime this can be a problem for me.  I am learning how to just let things go with the flow.

I hope these 7 tips help you freestyle poets out there. Remember, freestyle poetry is all about self-expression and breaking free from the traditional constraints of poetry. Let your creativity soar and let your words flow without inhibition.

Thank-you for reading.

Much Love and light,

Brenda Marie
