Flash Fiction:Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge #230

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge

What an interesting photo challenge Fandango has for us this week.  I am a dog lover.  So, this photo did get my attention. The challenge is  to write a flash fiction piece or a poem inspired by the photo. There are no style or word limits.

A Dog the Only True Guide to Heaven

Once upon a time, in a small town surrounded by lush green fields and rolling hills, there lived a man named Michael. Michael was a kind-hearted and compassionate person, but he had recently lost his beloved dog, Max, after a long and fulfilling companionship of many years.

Michael and Max had shared countless adventures together, creating an unbreakable bond that extended beyond the realm of the living. When Max passed away peacefully in his sleep, Michael was heartbroken. He felt an emptiness in his life that seemed impossible to fill. He would often sit by Max’s favorite spot in the garden, reminiscing about their cherished memories.

One evening, as the sun began to set, Michael sat alone on the porch, gazing at the darkening sky. Suddenly, a soft breeze rustled through the trees, and he felt an inexplicable presence beside him. Startled, Michael turned his head, expecting to find nothing but stillness. To his astonishment, there stood Max, his loyal dog, wagging his tail with excitement.

Michael’s heart skipped a beat as he realized he was witnessing something truly extraordinary. Tears of joy streamed down his face as he reached out to touch Max’s ethereal form. The dog’s spirit radiated with love and warmth, comforting Michael’s grieving soul.

Max gently nudged Michael’s hand, as if urging him to follow. Overwhelmed by curiosity and a deep desire to be reunited with his beloved friend, Michael hesitantly rose from his seat and took a step forward. To his amazement, Max’s spirit led the way, guiding him through the familiar fields and winding paths they had once explored together.

The night was peaceful, and the stars shone brightly above, lighting their way. As they journeyed further, Michael felt a sense of comfort and security, knowing that Max was there with him. It felt as if they were walking on a path between two worlds – the world of the living and the realm of the departed.

Finally, they reached the top of a hill, overlooking a breathtaking sight. A brilliant, Golden Gate stood before them, emanating a celestial glow. Michael’s heart swelled with anticipation as he realized this was the gateway to Heaven itself. Max, with an affectionate gaze, glanced back at Michael, as if reassuring him of the journey’s purpose.

With bated breath, Michael stepped forward, crossing the threshold between earthly existence and the divine realm. As he entered, an overwhelming feeling of peace enveloped him. He could hear a symphony of laughter and joy echoing through an endless meadow. In the distance, he spotted familiar faces – loved ones who had passed away before him.

Among them, Michael saw his parents, who had welcomed Max into their arms. Words were unnecessary; the love shared between Michael, Max, and his family spoke volumes. Max’s spirit wagged his tail one final time, as if to say his work was done and it was time to rest. Michael understood, and with a tearful goodbye, he watched Max’s spirit fade away.

United with loved ones and surrounded by eternal happiness, Michael knew that Max had guided him to this heavenly place. Their extraordinary bond had transcended beyond the boundaries of life and death, allowing them to be together once more.

Thank-you for reading,

Much love and light,

Blessing to all.
