3 Symbols Used in Reiki Level One

Symbols are used throughout all types of Reiki.  Over my lifetime working with people, I have known some who use the reiki symbols and others who do not.  It all depends on the person. I prefer to use the symbols. In this article I am going to explain the three symbols used in the first level of Reiki. There are several different versions of the Reiki symbols, but the first level or degree in Usui Reiki typically uses three symbols the Cho Ku Rei, Sei He Ki, and Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.

1. Cho Ku Rei: This symbol is also known as the Power symbol or simply the “CKR” symbol. It is often represented as a spiral or a key. It is used to increase the power of Reiki energy, to clear energy blockages, and to focus the energy for specific purposes.

Cho Ku Rei is a symbol used in Reiki, an alternative healing practice. It is a primary symbol and one of the first symbols taught in Reiki training. Cho Ku Rei is often referred to as the power symbol, and its primary purpose is to enhance and channel the healing energy during a Reiki session.

The symbol itself consists of three basic elements: a horizontal line, a vertical line, and a spiral. The horizontal line represents the energy flowing in a balanced manner, while the vertical line represents the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. The spiral is believed to represent the rotational movement of energy.

When using Cho Ku Rei during a Reiki session, practitioners draw or visualize the symbol in the air or on specific parts of the body. This is believed to help increase the energy flow and focus it on the intended area. It is commonly used to boost the energy level, cleanse and protect the energy field, and amplify the effects of Reiki treatments.

However, it is important to note that the effectiveness and significance of Reiki symbols can vary among practitioners and traditions. Some may attribute specific meanings or uses to Cho Ku Rei that are not universally accepted. If you are interested in learning more about Reiki and its symbols, it is recommended to seek out a qualified Reiki master or practitioner for accurate guidance and training.

2. Sei He Ki: This symbol is also known as the Mental/Emotional symbol or the “SHK” symbol. It is represented by two diagonal lines intersecting in the center, with two smaller lines branching off each side. It is used to heal emotional and mental imbalances, to release traumas, and to promote harmony and balance.

Sei He Ki is one of the symbols used in Reiki, a Japanese healing technique. It is primarily associated with mental and emotional healing. The symbol itself is depicted as two smaller vertical lines crossing a larger horizontal line with an S-shaped figure in the middle.

Sei He Ki is often used in Reiki healing sessions to address emotional and mental imbalances, such as anxiety, depression, or negative thought patterns. It is believed to assist in clearing and balancing emotional energy, promoting calmness and inner peace.

Practitioners may draw or visualize the Sei He Ki symbol while performing Reiki techniques, such as placing their hands on or near the recipient’s body. The symbol is thought to amplify the healing energy and direct it towards emotional and mental healing.

It is important to note that the Reiki symbols hold significance and power for Reiki practitioners who have been attuned to them through proper training and initiation. The use of symbols in Reiki is considered sacred and should be respected accordingly.

3. Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen: This symbol is also known as the Distance symbol or the “HSZSN” symbol. It is represented by various versions, but often with a large diamond shape in the center and smaller diamond shapes surrounding it. It is used to send Reiki energy across time and space, allowing distance healing and connecting with others at any location.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is a symbol used in Reiki,  used primarily for distance healing and connecting with the past, present, and future. The symbol is believed to transcend time and space to help send healing energy to someone or something that is not physically present. It is often used to heal past traumas, send healing to future events, or connect with people or situations that are far away. The symbol is drawn in a specific order and repeated three times, and practitioners believe that by visualizing and activating the symbol, they can establish a connection with the intended recipient.

These symbols are traditionally taught and used in the first degree Reiki training, but it’s important to note that not all Reiki traditions or lineages may follow the same symbols or teachings.  Not every teacher teaches the Reiki symbols either. So, I remind to to do research before starting and Reiki training to know the teacher as best as you can.

Thank-you for reading.

Many blessings to all.

Much love and light,

Brenda Marie
