Flash Fiction: Tinsel Town Tremors

This is just a test.  I have never written anything like this before.  This type of writing is  way out of the box for me.  Marjorie Mallon shared a post about a flash fiction contest, THE SIXTH ANNUAL WEIRD CHRISTMAS FLASH FICTION CONTEST.

I had to try and write a few stories first, as I am not too comfortable with my flash fiction writing skills these days. Please let me know what you think of this story.

Tinsel Town Tremors

SETTING

A cozy living room is adorned with twinkling lights, garlands, and a glistening Christmas tree in the corner. MARY, a young woman with kind eyes, is sitting on the couch, engrossed in a book titled “A Cryptic Christmas.” The door creaks open, revealing a tall, peculiar man named JAMES, who stumbles inside carrying a sack.

JAMES
(excitedly)
Mary, my dear, I’ve stumbled upon the most extraordinary Christmas special!

MARY
(rising)
Oh? Pray tell, James, what is this extraordinary show?

JAMES pulls out a VHS tape labeled “Tinsel Town Tremors.”

JAMES
(mischievously)
It’s a little-known Rankin Bass special with a twist. This one’s a mix of Christmas and… Tremors!

MARY
(confused)
Tremors? You mean those underground, monstrous creatures?

JAMES
(excitedly)
Precisely!

Mary hesitates, then pops the VHS into the player. They sit on the couch, anticipating the weirdness that awaits.

INT. TINSEL TOWN – DAY

Stop-motion figures resembling classic Rankin Bass characters frolic in a picturesque winter wonderland. Suddenly, the ground begins to SHAKE VIOLENTLY.

An earthworm-like creature bursts through the snow, followed by a horde of larger monsters, each wearing a Santa hat.

RUDOLPH
(voice is trembling)
Guys, we’ve got a serious problem here!

HERMIE
(nervously)
It looks like these tremors have disrupted Santa’s workshop.

YUKON CORNELIUS
(grinning)
Well, now, ain’t this a twist?!

The characters scramble to escape the wrath of the tremors while trying to maintain Christmas spirit.

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

Mary and James sit on the edge of their seats, captivated by the bizarre story unfolding on the screen.

EXT. TINSEL TOWN – DAY

A sleigh pulled by Rudolph rockets across the sky, with monsters chasing them from below. Hermie, wielding dental tools, fends off the creatures while Yukon Cornelius shoots silver-tipped arrows.

MARY
(whispering)
This is madness!

JAMES
(grinning)
Absolutely, my dear. It’s a delightful blend of holiday cheer and unearthly chaos.

An epic battle ensues as the misfit characters and monsters collide in a jumble of stop-motion animation and exhilarating music.

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

Mary and James laugh and cheer, completely absorbed in the display of weirdness before their eyes.

INT. TINSEL TOWN – DAY

The tremors finally subside, leaving the land of Tinsel Town in disarray. The characters, covered in dirt and snow, gather together to survey the damage.

SANTA CLAUS
(sighing)
Ho, ho, ho. It seems we’ve saved Christmas once again, albeit in a most unconventional manner.

They exchange victorious smiles, brushing off the snow from their peculiar customs.

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

The screen fades to black, and Mary and James sit in silence for a moment before bursting into applause.

MARY
(astonished)
That was… Odd, yet strangely captivating.

JAMES
(grinning)
Tinsel Town Tremors, my love. The pinnacle of esoteric Christmas specials.

They exchange a warm embrace, grateful for the peculiar beauty they had just witnessed.

FADE OUT.

Thank-you for reading.

Much Love and Light,

Brenda Marie
