Book Review: Jewel By Jan Sikes
After reading Debby Gies’ wonderful review of Jan Sikes book Jewel. I decided, to read it. This isn’t the type of book I normally read. But, Debby’s review was so inviting I decided to read the book.
Reading Jewel by Jan Sikes felt like opening the pages of someone’s heart—raw, tender, and beautifully human. From the very beginning, I was pulled into the world of this young woman living in 1930s Louisiana, where survival often takes precedence over dreams. The story is short, but it doesn’t waste a single word. Each sentence carries emotional weight, and I found myself rooting for Jewel in a way that surprised me.
What struck me most was the quiet strength of the main character. She doesn’t see herself as brave, but through her actions and sacrifices, she becomes a kind of quiet heroine. There’s a lot of heartbreak here, and yet, also so much hope. The way Jan Sikes paints her world—with rich, atmospheric detail—made me feel like I was there in the cabin with Jewel and her family, breathing the humid air, feeling the ache of loss, and longing for something better.
This story isn’t flashy or dramatic—it’s subtle and sincere, and that’s what makes it powerful. It reminded me that sometimes the most courageous acts are the ones no one sees. Jewel left me both heartbroken and uplifted, which is a rare thing for such a short read. I’d recommend it to anyone who appreciates emotional depth, historical settings, and stories that honor the quiet resilience of women. If you are looking for a nice Sunday read this book is great.
