What Is the Shadow Self?

“It is a frightening thought that man also has a shadow side to him, consisting not just of little weaknesses- and foibles, but of a positively demonic dynamism. The individual seldom knows anything of this; to him, as an individual, it is incredible that he should ever in any circumstances go beyond himself. But let these harmless creatures form a mass, and there emerges a raging monster.” ~ Carl Jung, “On the Psychology of the Unconscious.”

The shadow self is that side of yourself that you hide from yourself. The part of your unconscious mind that the conscious mind does not want to face. In other words, the shadow self is the darker side of the personality. The part of yourself that you do not want to accept for whatever reason.

The shadow self is the part of you that you do not what the world or yourself to see. The shadow self is those deep dark secrets and desires that we all hide. The shadow self is the side of you that you do not want to admit to, but it is still a part of who you are.

Because the shadow self is filled with what we all seem to see as the darkest sides of ourselves, we do not like to explore it. It is through that if one can break through the subconscious mind and reach the shadow self that much soul healing can take place. Or course this could take many lifetimes to achieve.

What is the shadow self, let’s go deeper?  I wrote the first part of this article over ten tens ago.  I have done a lot of research and work on the shadow self since then.  For one, I do not like to call it the shadow self,  since the research  I have done.  I prefer to call it the protector self.  Because over the years,  I have discovered the shadow self is a protector often protecting the part of us that were there, but lose do to childhood trauma or trauma of any kind.

At least, I have found this to be part of the shadow self. Therefore, I prefer to call it the protector self.  For instance a child told, ” Children should be seen and not heard, over and over again, throughout childhood, often shuts off their voice.  The child starts to believe the way to fit in is to be quiet and they learn not to speak their mind because it is the wrong thing to do. The shadow self or protector self stops the child from speaking their mind or speaking up.  So, hind that part of the personality in the shadows. Protecting the child from the dangers of using their voice.

I hope this article gives you a better understanding of the shadow self or protector self.

Much Love and Light,

Brenda Marie

  1. What you have written here really resonates with me! I have been working on my own shadow/protector issues and I know they are trauma-related. So for me, my goal is to heal the trauma. But meanwhile, I want to give myself as much love and acceptance as possible as I see these things come up.

  2. Brenda, how interesting that you associate the shadow self with the protector self. I understand your concept of the shadow self better than I understand the concept of protector self. I count on Jesus Christ to protect me, as in “deliver us from evil”. I do my best to stay in the Light.

    1. How interesting, I’ve never heard of the shadow self but I can see how the shadow could hold secrets. Only the shadow knows.
