
What is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)?
Emotional Freedom Technique, commonly known as EFT or “tapping,” is a holistic healing method that combines elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with acupressure. Developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, EFT has gained popularity worldwide as a tool for reducing stress, anxiety, pain, and emotional trauma. It’s often described as “psychological acupuncture,” but without the use of needles.
How Does EFT Work?
EFT is based on the idea that negative emotions are caused by disruptions in the body’s energy system. By gently tapping on specific meridian points on the face and body while focusing on a troubling emotion or memory, individuals can release emotional blockages and restore balance.
The basic technique involves:

Identifying the issue – This could be a fear, memory, or physical discomfort.

Rating the intensity – On a scale of 0 to 10, the person assesses how intense the emotion or pain feels.

The Setup Statement – A phrase is repeated to acknowledge the issue while accepting oneself (e.g., “Even though I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself”).

Tapping Sequence – Using fingertips, the individual taps on 8–10 acupressure points in a specific sequence.

Re-assessment – After tapping, the intensity of the emotion or pain is reassessed.

Clinical trials and peer-reviewed studies have shown EFT to be beneficial for reducing anxiety, phobias, and symptoms of PTSD. Organizations such as the American Psychological Association have acknowledged EFT’s potential while calling for further research.

EFT is non-invasive, easy to learn, and can be done almost anywhere. It empowers individuals to manage emotional stress without medication or complex techniques. While it’s not a replacement for professional medical or psychological treatment, EFT can be a powerful self-help tool or a complementary approach alongside traditional therapies.
