Spiritual Blockages That Cause Breathing Problems: Understanding the Mind-Body Connection
Breathing is the most vital and automatic function of the human body. From the moment we’re born, our breath keeps us alive, nourishes every cell, and connects us to the rhythm of life. But what happens when something feels “off” in our breathing and there’s no clear physical cause? For many people, especially those open to holistic and alternative perspectives, the answer lies not just in the physical body but also in the spiritual and energetic realms.
Spiritual blockages are subtle obstructions that form in our energy body. These blockages can arise from emotional trauma, suppressed emotions, karmic imprints, or unresolved past life experiences. They can affect how energy flows through us and, in turn, impact our physical body—particularly the lungs and respiratory system. In this article, we’ll explore how spiritual blockages can lead to breathing problems, how to identify them, and the steps you can take to release them for greater well-being.
The Breath-Spirit Connection
Across many spiritual traditions, breath is more than a physiological process. In Sanskrit, “prana” refers to the life force carried by the breath. In Chinese medicine, “qi” (or “chi”) flows through the meridians and governs all functions of life. In Christianity, the Holy Spirit is often referred to as the “breath of God.” Breath connects us to the divine, to the present moment, and to our innermost selves.
So, when our breath becomes restricted or shallow for no medical reason, it could be a sign of a deeper spiritual imbalance.
Common Spiritual Causes of Breathing Problems
1. Suppressed Grief and Heartache
The lungs are closely tied to grief in traditional Chinese medicine. When we hold on to sorrow, especially after losing a loved one or experiencing emotional betrayal, it can create energetic congestion in the chest. People often describe the sensation as a “weight on the chest” or a feeling like they “can’t breathe fully.”
This can manifest as:
-
Chronic shortness of breath
-
Tightness in the chest
-
Panic attacks or anxiety when trying to breathe deeply
Unexpressed grief becomes a heavy emotional burden, creating a spiritual blockage that disrupts the flow of energy to the lungs.
2. Fear of Life or Spiritual Expansion
For some, difficulty breathing can be tied to a fear of fully engaging with life or stepping into their spiritual gifts. Breath represents receiving. When someone is afraid of change, visibility, or transformation, they may subconsciously restrict their own breathing. It’s a way of pulling back from life.
These blockages often occur in the solar plexus and heart chakra, preventing the upward and downward flow of energy.
3. Unhealed Trauma and Anxiety
Trauma—especially from childhood—can cause long-term energy distortions. A person may hold their breath as a learned protective mechanism. Over time, this can become habitual, even when the danger is no longer present.
In spiritual terms, the soul may not feel safe residing fully in the body, causing breath to become shallow or inconsistent. Healing trauma often leads to spontaneous shifts in breathing patterns as the energy body realigns.
4. Blocked Heart Chakra
The heart chakra, or Anahata, governs our ability to give and receive love, to feel connected, and to embrace compassion. A blocked heart chakra can produce feelings of loneliness, resentment, or isolation—all of which energetically constrict the chest and lungs.
When the heart chakra is closed or guarded, it becomes physically harder to breathe deeply. Many people notice they sigh often or feel breathless during emotional events, even without exertion.

Energetic Signs of a Spiritual Breathing Blockage
-
Difficulty breathing in calm settings
-
Feeling disconnected from your body
-
Unexplained tightness in the chest
-
Anxiety with no medical cause
-
Shallow or erratic breathing
-
Feeling like you’re “not getting enough air”
-
Dreams or visions involving drowning, suffocation, or pressure
If you’ve ruled out physical causes with a healthcare provider and still struggle with breathing issues, it’s worth exploring the spiritual dimension.
Healing Spiritual Blockages Affecting Breath
The good news is that spiritual breathing blockages can be released and healed with consistent, intentional practice. Here are some methods that can help:
1. Breathwork and Pranayama
Intentional breathing techniques can help release energetic tension and bring awareness to where you’re holding back. Practices like conscious connected breathing, holotropic breathwork, and alternate nostril breathing can stimulate energy flow, unblock chakras, and restore the natural rhythm of breath.
2. Energy Healing (Reiki, Chakra Balancing)
Reiki and other forms of energy healing can target stuck energy in the heart or lungs. A practitioner may place their hands over the chest to help clear stagnant energy and encourage the free flow of prana or qi. Regular energy healing sessions can significantly improve emotional well-being and support easier breathing.
3. Emotional Release Practices
Techniques like EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique), journaling, inner child work, and somatic therapy can help bring suppressed emotions to the surface and gently release them. When grief, fear, or pain is acknowledged and released, many people report an immediate improvement in their breath.
4. Heart Chakra Meditation
Visualizing green light flowing into your heart center, or repeating affirmations like “I am open to love” or “It is safe to feel,” can begin to soften and open the energetic center associated with breathing.
5. Sound Healing and Vibration Therapy
Chanting, toning, or listening to heart-opening frequencies (like 639 Hz) can help shift stuck energy in the chest. The vibration stimulates the energy field and helps dissolve spiritual blockages.
When to Seek Support
While many spiritual breathing issues can be addressed with self-healing practices, others may benefit from working with a healer, spiritual counselor, or intuitive guide. If you’ve experienced deep trauma, loss, or emotional repression, having a safe container to work through these experiences is invaluable.
And remember, always rule out physical conditions first. Spiritual healing is complementary, not a substitute for medical advice.
Breathing problems don’t always have a physical cause. Sometimes, the breath is a messenger from the soul, alerting us to something unprocessed, unhealed, or unloved within. Spiritual blockages—especially those around the heart chakra and emotional body—can impact our lungs, our energy, and our ability to live fully.
By tuning into our inner world, practicing mindful techniques, and allowing ourselves to feel and heal, we can restore not only our breath but also our spiritual vitality. Breath is life, and when it flows freely, so do we.

This is a truly insightful and beautifully articulated piece. It masterfully weaves together ancient wisdom and modern holistic understanding in a way that feels both profound and deeply accessible.
What stands out most is the compassionate and empowering perspective you offer. Instead of framing breathing difficulties as a flaw or a permanent ailment, you reframe them as a message from the soul—a powerful call for attention and healing. The connection you draw between suppressed grief, fear, and a blocked heart chakra and their physical manifestation in the breath is explained with such clarity and grace.
Thank you for providing not just the “why,” but also the “how”—a practical and gentle roadmap for healing through breathwork, energy healing, and emotional release. This is a wonderful resource for anyone feeling stuck, both in their breath and in their life, and seeking a path back to flow and vitality. A truly enlightening read
Yes, one of the best things I ever did (that I wrote about in Have Yourself a Wholly Vibrant Life: Reversing Asthma and Other Chronic Illness Naturally), was to learn and practice EFT with a psychoanalyst and get to the root cause of the asthma!
I have not needed any medication in 20+ years since! And yes, my book details everything I did.

That’s it. I lowered the price recently too. It used to be $21.12
Ha!
I am going to to get it , when I get the chance. It may help me with my back and legs.
Sweet! I’ll check and see what I have in it for back and legs.
I did mention back issues in the book. And I just published a new article on DMSO you should see.
Here’s an excerpt from the first edition of my book (which had a different title):
“Most people, including me, would go to the Emergency Room (ER) when a bone might be broken, even after hearing Dr. Joe Dispenza’s story of how he worked within, and with, his own body to heal broken bones in his back after a horrific bicycle accident in 1986. I’ve previously blogged statements like, “Go to the doctor if you break a bone, but for asthma, digestive issues, migraines, back aches, arthritis, inflammation, and more… seek alternative health advice.”
