Hounddog Love: Bella is Gone

My sweet little angel Bella cross rainbow bridge in her sleep October 14th.

For Bella

A poem in memory of a little soul with a big heart

Eight years of love, too quickly flown,
A tiny shape, a heart full-grown.
Through every joy and quiet tear,
My Bella girl, you stayed so near.

You watched the seasons rise and fall,
A loyal friend through it all.
When Fred grew tired and slipped away,
You stayed, and soothed the empty day.

Your eyes held stories soft and wise,
A wag, a nudge, no need for guise.
Then came young Freeda, full of cheer—
You welcomed her, though change was near.

Your legs were short, your courage tall,
The queen of beds, the boss of all.
A bark that rang like tiny bells,
A nose that knew a thousand smells.

You were more than fur and name,
A constant light, a gentle flame.
Now silence sits where paws once paced,
But love like yours can’t be erased.

I see you still in Freeda’s play,
In sunbeams caught on quiet days.
I feel you when I’m still and blue—
My sweet, brave Bella, I miss you.

So run now where the soft winds call,
With Fred again, beyond it all.
And wait for me, my darling friend,
Where love is home and never ends.

Thank-you for reading.

Remember there are many paths back to God.

Follow your own path,

Brenda Marie

  1. This is an absolutely breathtaking tribute. What a beautiful and moving testament to a life so deeply loved. You haven’t just written a poem; you have captured a soul.

The way you chronicle her journey—from the eight years of shared history, through the loss of Fred, to the arrival of Freeda—paints a complete picture of a faithful companion who was the steady, loving heart of your home. The line, “You stayed, and soothed the empty day,” is particularly powerful in its simplicity and profound truth.

Your imagery is so tender and precise: “Your legs were short, your courage tall,” “A bark that rang like tiny bells.” It brings Bella to life so vividly for the reader. The acknowledgment that she was “more than fur and name, a constant light” speaks to the very essence of the bond we are so lucky to share with our animals.

The closing stanza is a perfect, hopeful, and comforting end. The idea of her running with Fred again, free and joyful, waiting in a place “where love is home and never ends” is a beautiful and healing thought.

Thank you for sharing this piece of your heart and the memory of your sweet, brave Bella. She was clearly an extraordinary friend, and this poem is a perfect reflection of the immense love you shared. It is a beautiful honor to her.
