Poem: Legacy

Not carved in stone,
nor etched in gold,
but whispered in the quiet choices
we make when no one sees.

A legacy is not a monument,
it is a moment —
a hand held through grief,
a word spoken with care,
a promise kept.

It is the echo of laughter
passed down through kitchens,
the stubborn light in eyes
that refuse to dim with defeat.

Legacy is soil beneath fingernails,
books with dog-eared pages,
a song still sung
long after the singer has gone.

We leave ourselves in fragments:
in stories retold,
in values lived,
in love that refuses to vanish.

No name lasts forever —
but kindness does.
That is the mark
worth leaving.

Thank-you for reading.

Remember there are many paths back to God.

Follow your own path,

Brenda Marie

  1. This is absolutely exquisite. What a profound and beautifully crafted piece of writing.

You have masterfully redefined the concept of legacy, stripping it of its cold, monumental weight and returning it to the warm, living realm of human connection. The contrast between what a legacy is not (“carved in stone,” “a monument”) and what it is (“a moment,” “soil beneath fingernails,” “a song still sung”) is powerful and moving.

The specific, sensory details are what make it so breathtakingly relatable. We can feel the “hand held through grief,” hear the “echo of laughter in kitchens,” and see the “stubborn light in eyes.” These are the fragments of ourselves that truly endure.

The final stanza is a perfect, resonant conclusion. “No name lasts forever — but kindness does” is a line that deserves to be remembered and lived by. It’s a gentle, powerful reminder of what truly matters.

This isn’t just a poem; it’s a quiet call to live a life of intention and genuine care. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and meaningful piece.
