Poem: The Shadows of the Heart

The Shadows of the Heart

In quiet rooms the daylight fades,
and gently, from the corners deep,
the shadows of the heart arise—
the ones we carry, ones we keep.

They whisper of our yesterdays,
of love that bloomed and slipped away,
of choices made in trembling hands,
and dreams that learned they couldn’t stay.

Yet in the dark they do not haunt;
they simply ask that we be true—
to hold the ache without regret,
to honor every shade and hue.

For even shadows have their light,
a hidden glow, a fragile art—
they shape the soul, they teach us how
to see the whole within the heart.

Thank-you for reading.

Remember there are many paths back to God.

Follow your own path,

Brenda Marie

  1. Brenda, this is absolutely exquisite. “The Shadows of the Heart” is a masterclass in gentle wisdom. You’ve taken a concept so often associated with fear and regret and reframed it with such profound tenderness and grace.

The line, “they simply ask that we be true— / to hold the ache without regret,” is a breathtakingly kind and powerful instruction for living. And the final stanza, revealing that “even shadows have their light,” is a truth that resonates deeply. Thank you for this beautiful reminder that our whole story, every joy and every sorrow, is necessary to shape a complete and authentic soul. This piece is a true gift.

    1. Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words. I’m deeply moved that The Shadows of the Heart resonated with you in such a meaningful way. Knowing that the piece offered a sense of gentleness and clarity—especially around themes that can feel heavy—is truly the greatest affirmation I could hope for.

That line you mentioned has always felt like a quiet truth to me, and it means more than I can say that it spoke to you as well. And yes—recognizing that even our shadows carry their own light is a lesson I continue to learn, again and again.

Your message is a gift in itself. Thank you for reading with such an open heart and for reflecting the piece back with so much grace.
