Poem: Don’t Hold Other People’s Shadows

Don’t Hold Other People’s Shadows

Don’t cradle the weight of another’s dusk,
Their stormy yesterdays in your dawn’s hush.
Not every sorrow that brushes your skin
Belongs to the garden you’re growing within.

You are not the echo of their unrest,
Not every burden needs space in your chest.
Their silence, their sighs, their thunderous fears—
Don’t let them plant rain in your sunlit years.

It’s noble to listen, to offer your light,
But not to dim your stars for their night.
You are not a vessel for borrowed regret,
Not every fire is yours to forget.

Walk beside them, yes—but stand in your skin.
Let your own breath be where life begins.
Kindness does not mean becoming their pain;
You can love without wearing their chain.

So open your hands, let the shadows fall—
They were never yours to hold at all.

Thank-you for reading.

Much love and Light,

Brenda Marie Fluharty
